Smritivan Earthquake Memorial

Vastushilpa Consultants have designed a new memorial honouring the victims of the 2001 Gujarat earthquake.

The memorial sits below a military fort that was also restored as part of the design which is also seeking to act as a public gathering space for the local population.

Sitting on the hill the memorial blends naturally with its surrounding landscape as intended by the architects who did not want to disturb the hillside with a typical rectangular structure out of respect.

The public spaces which stream up the hill on which the memorial sits are shaded by funnel-shaped polytetrafluoroethylene canopies. It is around this spinal shape that the memorial expands from, built with locally-sourced stones that have a more rigid design than the canopies which invoke a biomimetic form.
