Renaissance Renaissance
Cynthia Merhej is the founder and designer of fashion brand Renaissance Renaissance which recently presented its first SS25 collection in a show at Merhej’s own apartment.
Renaissance Renaissance’s designs have continued to gain the interest and attention of the fashion world since its founding in 2016. However, the brand carries with it strong political influences and references that try to promote the contrasts between conflict and resistance against the desire for peace.
Merhej is of Palestinian-Lebanese heritage and in Renaissance Renaissance’s ‘References’ story highlight you will find several images relating to the Palestinian struggle. One highlight is of a still from the film Divine Intervention, directed by Elia Suleiman, which depicts the story of a Palestinian couple who is divided by several checkpoints under the military occupation. Another is of a keffieh, the traditional headdress now synonymous with the Palestinian struggle. However, others touch upon lighter moments of cultural representation, but not without being prefaced by a photo of a woman sitting, cross-legged, with a strong posture and confident look with the word “masculine” laid out next to the photo.
