Brazil Wins Golden Lion at Venice Biennale

The Brazilian pavilion, Terra, curated by Gabriela de Matos and Paulo Tavares was awarded the Golden Lion prize for best national pavilion at the Venice Biennale.

The pavilion, the title of which translates to earth, was filled with rammed-earth plinths which sought to represent how the Brazilian landscape and land formed the nation’s understanding of heritage and identity.

Coarse by Samuel Ross

Samual Ross, the designer behind the fashion label A-Cold-Wall, has designed a furniture collection being exhibited at the Friedman Benda Gallery in New York. The furniture designs are inspired by Ross’s childhood in the Brixton housing blocks as well as the history of the Black community in London. The pieces are brutalist yet playful with a contrast in finishes and colours. This playfulness is not accidental as Ross drew from the modernist playgrounds in which he played. The collection also contains deep symbolism in the choice of materials and its design which you can read more about here.

La Oficina del Parque <3 Excel

Studio Ingrid Picanyol has designed a brand identity for the cafe/bar La Oficina del Parque in Barcelona based entirely on Microsoft Excel.

Given the establishment is targeted at digital nomads Picanyol thought it was only logical for them to use Excel as the framework and design tool when coming up with the branding.

The designer used its cells as the grid for designing the logo, visuals, collaterals and even the website.

Asics Novalis

A new collaborative collection between Asics and Kiko Kostadinov is announced for release in October at Paris Fashion Week. The pieces will take on simple designs with reduced components in contrast with other labels that have released similar collections. Kostadinov has made the intention behind his design choices very clear, stating that the collection is made to go against the gorpcore trend.

Timberland & A-Cold-Wall

For the latest collaborative season between A-Cold-Wall and Timberland, Samuel Ross has reimagined the workwear brand’s classic boot. The boot’s silhouette is slightly reworked into its foundational components to give it a minimalist and futuristic look that is aligned with ACW’s other works. You can read more about the collection on Ross’s interview with Wallpaper* here.
